History of Masonry in Newcastle

Brick
Brick is America’s most popular masonry material, though masonry structures made only from brick are virtually unknown. Rather, brick is most commonly used as a facing for interior or exterior walls of various types of structural systems—traditional or modern—mainly of wood or steel.
Brick is a fireproof product that is manufactured in a great variety of shapes, sizes, colors, surface textures, and installation patterns. These characteristics, along with its durability, ease of maintenance, reasonable cost, insulative value, local availability, and long service life, make it an attractive material. Brick is commonly made from clay, but it can also be made from shale, cement, or other materials. Common clay-type brick is made of a mixture of clays that vary widely in color, texture, and physical properties according to the source. The majority of clay from which brick is made is available in a rich variety of colours. These colours range through yellows, ochers, reds, browns, and purples, all of which may be employed in the building of walls. Brown, red, and yellow bricks are those in most common use today. Wall surfaces can be smooth, rough, glared, or sandblasted. Popular brick sizes are approximately 220 x 105 x 70 mm or modular sizes (as well as slimmer modular sizes); while thinner brick, known as brick veneer, has some of the same features and advantages as the real product. Types of Stone
Stone is classified into two broad categories: sedimentary and igneous. Sedimentary stone is formed from compacted mineral particles that are deposited in layers. Common examples of this type of stone are limestone, sandstone, shale, and marble. Igneous stone is formed when lava cools and hardens over time. This group includes such rocks as granite, slate, and basalt.
Stone Blocks
The most common shapes of stone for masonry are blocks, some of which can be quite large, usually six to eight inches thick and two feet long. The majority of blocks are at least twice as long as they are wide so that they can be laid in a variety of ways to reduce the number of joints showing. In addition, those blocks that are not hollow and have wide exposed surfaces should be finished smooth rather than with a rough texture. The block may have a sand, pebbled, or cut surface.

Concrete
Concrete masonry refers to the precast concrete block units made with hydra-cement concrete. The early blocks made use of hollow design to reduce weight and increase insulation, though this early design was not as structurally strong as bricks. Modern developments have resulted in stronger aggregate concrete blocks not needing the hollow design, and these are being used to support reinforced concrete beams and slabs in large buildings. Standard hollow concrete blocks used in masonry walls come in different sizes; the nominal size is 390x190x190 mm and the standard size is 385x190x190 mm.
Concrete blocks, in general, are manufactured in two grades; heavyweight and lightweight. Light-weight blocks are more suited to general work requiring insulation, whereas heavyweight blocks are used to carry heavy loads in high-rise structures or high noise areas from heavy traffic. The concrete blocks can be of many different textures, colours, and shapes, and can even be glazed to give them a perfect finish. A masonry wall can actually house electrical and plumbing conduits by setting cutouts in the blocks themselves, apart from the insulation of any pipes or ducts. However, even with so many advantages of concrete blocks, they are not as aesthetically pleasing as brick or stone walls, and hence internal walls in high-quality constructions would usually be plastered over a layer of cement-sand mortar.
Importance of Proper Painting Techniques
The importance of proper painting techniques for masonry surfaces cannot be overemphasised. Paying attention to these details is what sets exceptional and memorable painting projects apart. Blistering, peeling, and cracking of paints are all too often the results of poor understanding of surface preparation and painting methods or the economy of time and labor. Surface treatment is as crucial to masonry painting as it is to oils and other types of paints. An unclean surface will repel paint, and either a glossy unporous surface made shiny by freeze-thaw cycles or a too-porous one will not give satisfactory results. A clean surface is the best surface. Cleaning with acid solutions or with commercial cleaning agents is the answer to the problem in most cases. Avoid lye cleaning agents. When painting very dirty or stained masonry surfaces, evaluate and possibly attempt to ascertain the exact cause of the stains, and properly treat them when necessary prior to re-painting the surface. The next important factor is to use the right product. Avoid thin low hiding paints. They are designed to hit a lower price point and their use usually results in unsatisfactory performance under most conditions. Masonry surfaces generally require paints that are thick and are either designed for wet areas or that have anti-fungal properties. They should also preferably be paints with a higher resin content that dry to a hard film rather than soft chalky films. Select paints that use quality resins and have satisfied the demands of the architectural community. Thin layer paints and those that are non-resinous or use inferior resins may have excellent initial hiding properties, but turn chalky and brittle and are short-lived under the rigors demanded by masonry surfaces. When doing a re-painting job on a structure with an outer surface that has been previously painted with a thin layer semi-gloss latex interior paint, you will not be able to achieve better results or make the job last longer by doing the job the same way.
Choosing the Right Paint for Masonry
When it comes to masonry painting, you'll want to select your paint carefully, just as you do for interior work and woodworking. Fortunately, you have a wide variety of paints to choose from - here are just a few recommendations for the best types to use in various masonry settings. Masonry surface characteristics require waterproof paint, especially in regions of the home that are continually rained upon or trapped near sprinklers or groundwater. All Portland cement products are waterproofed by the presence of silicate compounds in the surface of the Portland cement. When moisture or water condenses onto the surface, it creates a film on the surface, creating the environment for efflorescing - the crystallization of the soluble compounds in the cement which does not become part of the cement structure. When we waterproof Portland cement, we create the seal that prevents moisture penetration up to a specified load of incoming moisture that can be expected. It is truly rare that any other type of wall would be as susceptible to condensation or vapor barrier failure as that of Portland cement. Therefore, any selection should come equipped with a quality vapor barrier and waterproofing paint so that it can withstand the expected moisture load. A similarly breathable paint for masonry surfaces would be a stain rather than a full-blown coating. There are clear silicate stains available, but they are not able to waterproof these surfaces and they count as breathable because they are made with a highly modified silicon compound that decreases the ability for Portland cement to effloresce at a reduced price that is most attractive for developers and managers. There are true gelatin and casein paints and a variety of silicate and silicone paints available that agree with the natural characteristics of the Portland cement surface best when the gelatins are painted on fresh surface and the casein has completely cured for several weeks. Silicates have been used for decades and are still popular, but they will only take the clear sealers and not silicate paints. Additionally, there are flame-hardened oil fire-resistant paints available.
Waterproof Paints
The first and most intuitive option available to you when considering paint for masonry will be waterproof paints. These rich, thick coatings for masonry, parged surfaces, and stonework are excellent at repelling water. Providing this protection in your building's architecture will prolong the life of that construction, whether it's a home or business. Waterproof coatings are great for silos, bins and sewers too — anywhere moisture is a concern.
Available in hard or elastic varieties, waterproof coatings are applied like paint, but look a bit like slate in finish. A hard coating offers excellent resistance to dirt and abrasion, which will be a huge consideration if you're painting an exposed area. An elastic coating, on the other hand, is better for areas with chemically aggressive or slightly shifting surfaces. The specific choice and usage will depend on application details not covered here, so be sure to consult your contractor or hardware store staff before making your choice.
Bear in mind also that a solid waterproof coating applied in the wrong place could do more harm than good. In particular, do not use these paints in areas vulnerable to rot. Any surface that may displace moisture from within, such as raised sections in wood beams, are subject to premature decay if coated. Where waterproof paints are used, this should only be for specific reasons, and ideally the risks involved should be reduced by discussions between the architect and the paint manufacturer.
Breathable paints were designed to work with the natural physical/chemical make up of the substrate, their texture reflects the porous nature of the masonry, letting the moisture emitted from the masonry escape, while resisting rain penetration. Initially silicone paints were marketed for this purpose but have a high price. The range is still quite limited and most watercolor paints are still sold on the market for this purpose. Although the more common use of the term "watercolour" today refers only to traditional watercolour paints, which are little used for painting masonry today. Although they comply with the requirements for use on other surfaces, these also may risk non-breathability for these surfaces.

Preparation Steps for Painting Masonry
Before applying paint to any masonry surface like concrete walls or blocks, or brick or stucco exteriors, there are a few steps to complete: clean the surface, repair any cracks or damaged areas, and if required, apply primer. We’ll discuss each preparation step here. The first thing you must do is clean the masonry surface. So, the question is, how do you clean it? Well, it depends on various factors. For example, what type of surface or material are you dealing with? Brick, concrete, block, stucco? Another factor to keep in mind is what type of dirt, dust, molds, or mildew are you trying to remove? And then what cleaning solution will be the most effective but least detrimental to the surface being cleaned? When doing the cleaning – wearing protective eyewear, and in some cases, gloves and a mask – scrub the surface to remove dirt, dust, or other debris. If using a pressurized spray system, make sure the hose doesn’t have too high of pressure to avoid damaging the surface. After the surface is cleaned, inspect it for cracks or any chipped or flaking areas or other damage. If you find tight cracks, use a caulk tube with an appropriate colour-matched caulking material to fill the cracks. You may have to push the caulking into the cracks with a putty knife for it to adhere properly. Larger cracks may need to be filled with a patching compound. Chipped or flaking areas must be repaired by scraping and sanding the edges back to the remaining surface, and then apply a patching compound. Stains from rust, mildew, or other areas should be treated accordingly with appropriate cleaning solutions. After repairs and treatments are completed, the surface may need to be sealed, and a primer may need to be applied before final painting.
Cleaning the Surface
Cleaning masonry surfaces is very important to ensure a good finish when painting. In many cases, the old paint comes off. The repair cost is much greater than the cost of a good cleaning effort before painting. Impressive finishes can be done by various cleaning methods. One way to clean masonry surfaces is to use a solution of vinegar and hot water. Use a 50-50 vinegar and water mixture, apply it to the area, and scrub with a stiff brush. After the scrubbing, rinse the area with plain water to remove the vinegar solution. Repeat as necessary until the surface is clean.
If soap and vinegar don't remove the dirt and discolouration from the area, it will be necessary to use a more aggressive cleaning method like power washing. A power washer connected to a water supply, detergent, and scrub brush may be able to remove dirt and discoloration. You can use a commercial detergent as a flushing agent and scrub. You may need to flush again using clean water and a scrub brush. Power washing can be effective, especially where there is weathering, but it requires care to avoid damaging the porous surface of the cement.
Some have been known to use detergent to clean masonry surfaces, but special care is needed in using it, as it can be harmful to the environment. In general, the concrete surfaces should be well prepared and cleaned thoroughly prior to painting. Prior to using any commercial cleaning detergent, test the surface in an inconspicuous area to ensure the chemical won't damage the surface of the masonry. After cleaning, let the area completely dry before applying the primer coat.
Repairing Cracks and Damage
Check the surface for cracks before painting. Masonry primers are designed to fill shallow cracks, but deeper cracks and voids need to be treated. Deteriorated areas must be repaired before the project is painted so it doesn't cause any issues later on. Repairing textures in masonry walls might require some technique and some research is advisable. For painting uneven surfaces like stone, brick, or block walls. Avoid painting if there is dampness behind the masonry. If there is salt efflorescence it could indicate that moisture is present below the surface. You might also want to seal moisture issues before proceeding.
If you are repairing brick, you will want to use the following steps: Remove damaged mortar within a 1/2 inch of both wall surfaces with a hammer and chisel, a rotary tool, or a mortar saw. Clean out the damaged mortar joints thoroughly so there is no loose debris remaining. Mix water with a mortar mix according to instructions. Follow these steps for repairing stone: Remove any damaged mortar with a hammer and chisel. Clean the joints thoroughly. Examine the state of the stone as well. Obtain a stone match if necessary. Chip away any areas that are soft or broken out. You can also repair stucco damage by cutting away loose or broken-out areas. Dampen the area for easier adhesion. Mix appropriately and pack it into the hole. Allow to cure before painting.
Applying Primer
After completing the preparation tasks, we can begin applying masonry primer. Some of the materials that are generally required for masonry work include brushes, sprayers, ladders, scaffolding, sealants, paints, and a few more. It is typically required that the layers of the smooth surface of the walls need to be removed, after which the surfaces are sealed and painted with a high-quality sealer or primer coat. It is recommended that a few coats are layered on the surface. It is also preferred that before the job is undertaken, a sample is placed on the surface to check the compatibility of the paint that is being selected with the dry surface.
Brushes and Rollers: Brushes may be required in the case where a textured surface of the masonry is to be painted. A roller is required when the painter goes with the textured paint, especially for a walled structure. For the rough textured masonry surface, a long-napped roller is important. Some situations may also require the painter to paint corners and tighter areas of the structure. For this, specially-designed brushes are available.
Sprayers: An airless sprayer is an easy tool to use for texturing walls and also when fine-grain paint is to be applied to the mortar units, especially when the coating method is to be followed. An airless paint sprayer can be used for specialty paints that include waterproofing paints, elastomeric paints, and paint with a texture that is similar and thick to that used in stucco surfaces.
Ladders and Scaffolding: For surfaces that are taller, scaffoldings are a good option and are safer too. Various systems of scaffoldings are adaptable for use on work surfaces that are irregular. For the painter who has to complete a project by using ladders, it is better to use a mix of two-section, extension, step, pic, and single ladders.
Brushes and Rollers
When it comes to painting masonry surfaces, choosing the right brush and roller as an applicator is critical to the quality of the job. While many factors influence the final result, including the quality of the paint and the preparation of the surface, unless the correct brush and roller is used, the quality can never be at its best. Brushes and rollers should be of good quality and should be suited for the surface texture and type of paint to be used.
For textured surfaces or thick coatings, if a roller cover is used, a long nap, lambswool, or synthetic-blend roller should be used. All brushes used should be of good quality, and for latex coatings, synthetic bristles should be used. Brushes used on paints with latex will need to be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water. If solvent coatings are used, brushes with natural bristles should be used. These brushes can be cleaned with lacquer thinner. Another important aspect is the choice of roller frame, where a heavier frame is needed for the productive brushing of large areas. A small frame should be used for difficult areas, such as corners and edges, which require specialised brushes.
Sprayers
Airless sprayers make applying paint and sticking a breeze. Big jobs can be finished within a quarter of the time it would take with a brush or roller. Spraying is dead easy too; just hold the gun, adjust the nozzle and the pump will do all the work. That said, airless sprayers aren't without their drawbacks. An airless sprayer won't really give you the "classic" painted finish that you may come to expect. If you're using a coloured paint, it will also take a few more coats to produce an opaque finish over a white base coat. Because paint is mixed and drawn up from a bucket, a 2.5-litre bucket of paint doesn't last a particularly long time. Those on a budget may also be put off by the costs; you'll be blown away by how much a decent airless sprayer costs.
It may be wise to hire instead of buy if you've never used a sprayer before. After two coats, we pretty much mastered the airless sprayer that we used. The main things to remember are, make sure you always have the gun vertical and also be careful around edges. In areas where you have paint splatters or where you don't want paint to go, you'll want to go in with a brush and roll a couple of times to cover come the texture back. When using an airless sprayer indoors, make sure you've covered furniture and floors. Aim to do it on a day that's nice and breezy for the fumes to get blown out the window.
Ladders and Scaffolding
Ladders provide convenient access to the upper areas of a building and are relatively inexpensive and easy to transport. Contractors can choose from a large variety of ladders but should select quality products that are designed for load limits that exceed potential demands. Ladders should be tall enough that the work is performed at an appropriate height, not from the last couple rungs. Roofing ladders are an excellent tool for sitting on steep slopes. Extension ladders should be set at about a 3 to 1 ratio. Provide tie sticks or the angle rails should be tied off when work is performed 1/3 the distance from top to bottom. Equipment that could fall should be secured when work is performed at a height exposed to vulnerability from below. Folding aluminum climbing ladders are fast working tools for roof access and are often used for mortar joints spraying. Extension ladders cannot quickly be moved from the front of a building to the side but can set the tradesman up high enough in some situations.
When considerable work will be performed at an elevated area, erecting scaffolding or special working platforms is often a good idea. The work can be set at a comfortable working height, easily moved along the area, and protected from falling objects. Working personnel can tie off and minimize the risk of falling. Scaffolding increases productivity and is often safer than ladders. Scaffolding can be produced with lumber and supports, light metal, or fiberglass. There are many materials and types available that should be selected for the work task, load, confined area considerations, and any weather conditions. Fast-moving adjustable scaffolding is a good investment for many trade types. It can be used indoors and out for bulk work projects that require elevated working positions.
Techniques for Painting Masonry
A number of techniques may be used in painting most surfaces, masonry is not therefore unique in this respect. When painting for decoration, concealed surfaces can often be merely painted with a brush making little effort to create a key. The same painter would rid surfaces of the surface contamination, the growth of fungi or algae, remedial filling, key generation and the application of a first coat of primer-sealer using the best technique - usually spray application. The first coat should be a penetrating primer/sealer for maximum adhesion and durability. Thereafter, undercoats and finishes may be treated in the same basic way but applied with a roller using a nap long enough to get the paint to the depths of the surface texture while maintaining a reasonable application rate. Alternatively subsequent layers can be applied with a brush, roller, or spray at the discretion of the painter and the real needs of the job.
Brush Techniques
Acrylic paints may be brushed but care must be exercised as they dry quickly so that smearing could occur but, if applied over a sealed surface with a good key drying times should not be excessive. When brushing with solvent-based systems, allow the surface, fillers and sealers to dry thoroughly before commencing the next step. The second coat should be painted before the first coat dries to the point of no return, usually towards the end of the first coats drying exercise. A finely textured surface paper may be used to generate finer sealers and coat surfaces. When applied, do dry-brush lightly along each run, from the wet edge to give a feathered edge. Any colour difference should be eliminated at an undercoat stage or, failure to do so may show in the final finish. The edges of rolls where the paint hits the surface at each end will require attention and can be taken down with a brush.
Spray Techniques
Spraying is probably the simplest method as it puts the paint onto the surface at a pre-defined thickness in one or two operations. Ideally, prior to spraying the final coat, a painted panel or a corner of the wall should be done to check for approved thickness and match colour and other properties as appropriate. The spray method has several disadvantages in practice. Primarily, the overspray associated with it means that protective sheets will have to be placed over adjacent surfaces.
Roller Techniques
As well as being quick, rollers give an even coat thickness without the mess associated with spraying. Generally accepted practice is to use a nap long enough to cover the surface texture and get the paint into the openings but not overly long as to be hard work and not to waste paint. These apply a dry-brushing technique at the edges to remove the build-up of paint.
Brush Techniques
Brush techniques for masonry dilapidation painting are, in a sense, the oldest methods used to conserve historic buildings. Indeed, before air and airless spraying were invented, only brushes, spatulas, and rollers were employed in execution of such works. Use of brushes actually for painting facades reminds of the cave men period, and it may be claimed that designers were artistically educated men with a talent in painting. It is only with introduction of continuous production systems in the 19th century, and later on, industrial production of films devoted to facades decoration that brush techniques development has undergone an irremediable stop. Certainly, they allowed for restoration of historical decorations, but did not bring any contribution to art.
Attention, directed towards brush application techniques has presently especially increased. It was found that their characteristics contribute to many aspects of both, the construction and use of buildings: formation of thin film on the surface, good wear resistance, etc. By using brushes it is possible to obtain films of various structure and thickness, to fill small cracks and other defects existing on the surface. Consequently, a greater understanding of the film formation process is necessary.
Objects and buildings in the specific climate of which brush techniques can be used should be defined. It is known that brushing is employed worldwide in warm and dry climates. In addition, the possibility to apply multicolored techniques should encourage designers to use this method. Apparently, the lack of constraints on the technique is not sufficient to launch the use of this method, since according to still-existing habits, industrial processes and easier regulations decree that sprays should be favoured.
Spray Techniques
At a glance, spray painting seems very simple and straightforward. However, the opposite is actually true. There is a great deal of skill, education, and experience that goes into effectively spray painting surfaces. Additionally, there is a hell of a lot more preparation and post-painting cleanup that real spray painting involves, even if you cannot see it from the outside. All of that is to say – do not take spray painting for granted. Let’s begin by outlining some of the major benefits of spray painting methods. A major draw to using spray painting techniques is how quickly we can complete a job’s surface painting. Spray painting techniques allow us to cover large areas in just a portion of the time it would take to achieve the same with a brush or roller. For surfaces with textured areas, spray painting is an even better option. It is much front-loaded in terms of masking, but once that initial work is done, we can cover and coat an otherwise tedious surface style quickly and easily. When we have a good spray gun, we have total control over how much paint we lay down and where that paint goes. This means that spray painting also allows for varied textures, or at least more differentiable textures than brushing or rolling might be able to give you. However, as mentioned previously, there are some downsides to using a spray method. Skilled spray painting requires skill and experience. You need to know what nozzle size to use with how much pressure at what distance to achieve the finish style we want, as well as other factors like pressure and speed. Spray painting leads to more overspray than brush or roller techniques. So, there is more prep before the job and cleanup afterward.
Roller Techniques
Roller application of paint on vertical masonry surfaces incorporates three techniques. Techniques one and two are best for large, flat walls and their approach is somewhat similar to that described previously for applying paint with broad-bristle brushes. Their application differs from brushes essentially in that the pile-covered roller creates texture but lays down thicker films, which may be desirable for coverage and regulation of aeration. However, thick "ropes" of paint created by rollering with too small a roller or using too little pressure can build up unevenly into beading semi-gloss floors and painted woodwork. Use only 1/4 or 3/8-inch pile rollers for masonry, and select longer piles (usually 1 1/2-inches for walls). Technique three is most suitable for surface textures with recesses.
Technique one. Use a roller to paint any flat wall areas not around openings or adjacent to trim. Use a 1/4-inch roller loaded up with paint. Start by "rubbing in" paint on the wall with the roller on its side. Then roll on the paint, moving fast enough to maintain a wet edge at all times. Technique two. Apply paint to the flat wall surface with a roller to spread it readily. Then use a broader brush to stipple it into the brick or stone, working in sections that can be completed before the paint starts to dry. Change to a shorter nap roller for touch-up work. Technique three. Load a bristle brush with paint and use it to stipple into the recesses of the wall. Follow with a roller to fill in the high spots, wiping off the roller if dry paint builds up on it. Use a small roller or brush for touch-up work.
Common Challenges in Masonry Painting
Although it's a great way to update the look of your house, painting masonry is not without its potential pitfalls. Here are three problems that you may encounter when it comes to masonry painting:
Moisture Issues
One serious problem with painting masonry is moisture - and, specifically, preventing it from being trapped between the paint and the surface of the masonry. Water that's either in the masonry or behind it needs to be able to travel outwards; if it's not able to, it will inevitably push on the coating, leading to bubbling and blistering and eventually ruining the paint job. To help prevent this from happening, most professionals use breathable vapor-permeable coatings that allow water vapor to escape but do not allow liquid water in. It's vital to make sure that traps moisture are not already present within the masonry structure before applying this coating, as sealing these traps is an important initial step before painting masonry.
Surface Roughness
Masonry surfaces are often very rough because of their texture; their texture may create a unique and interesting look when left unpainted, but if you do decide to paint, this very rough surface may pose an issue because it can create a very uneven coating and may not look too flattering. This is particularly true if you are using a colour that is different from the original color of the masonry or one that exactingly matches the original Colour. It can be especially difficult to deal with this issue when painting large areas of masonry. However, you do have some options; for example, you can either remove even more of the original roughness through sanding or a sand blasting treatment before painting or have one of the specialists in masonry painting take care to put on a proper undercoat that will help ensure a more even look.
Colour Matching
When it comes to colour, another problem that may arise is that you may have difficulty matching and/or getting the desired colour for the actual masonry paint. Without prior experience, it can be difficult to know or estimate what the finished colour will look like when the paint is dried and the substrate is already weathered. Different surfaces and substrates will absorb varying amounts of the paint; thus, the final appearance may differ significantly from sample color. Certain paints may also wear differently over time; in some cases, the only way to inquire about this matter is to simply obtain the opinion of an expert.
Moisture Issues
There are many issues that need to be overcome when painting a wall built of stone or brick. Generally speaking, the physical conditions are never as good as for a painted wall made of sheet rock and plaster. Oftentimes people will replace a repaired surface with cement patching compound as a filling material. Even worse are the use of commercial mortar compounds, which add much to the roughness of the surface. On the other hand, if traditional lime mortar was used on the cracked or missing joints, the conditions may all be in fairly good shape. It will be useless to coat the wall surface with concrete sealers to minimize moisture issues since the coatings will not allow the wall to breathe. This will only cause the paint to fail more miserable.
In general, the life of a paint film on a masonry wall can be influenced by such physical conditions as temperature and ventilation. Since cement has a very low thermal conductivity, which is also much lower than that for cast iron and brick, it is obvious that a masonry wall can act as an insulator. While this is sometimes good for preventing heat loss in winter, it will also create a solar sauna inside. If this should happen on an east- or south-facing wall in summer, the film temperature can easily go up to 130-140°F. The results can be softened paint, blistering, and peeling. These damages can also be seen on ceilings at their borders in rooms without air conditioning when the ambient humidity is high. After drying, moisture will gravitate towards the cold ceilings, causing the paint to finally get damaged.
Surface Roughness
Stone, bricks and clinkers are commonly used in masonry construction for assembling walls. These materials have a rough surface at a micro-level. Structural mortar is injected between surfaces of bricks and stone blocks or at the edges of clinkers during masonry construction. The mortar lines on the surfaces of masonry walls create very rough graffiti-like walls that are very difficult to coat uniformly. However, a local roughness can be seen on all masonry walls, usually with the depth of about 2 to 3 mm and a mean distance of about 6 to 8 mm.
The surface quality of traditional limestone and sandstone may also affect the final appearance of the paint film. For instance, some types of red bricks have very fine pores on the surface and should remain unpainted to allow moisture to be released. When these porous bricks are coated with an impermeable paint, spalling of the paint may occur. In other situations, the surface of the bricks is too porous and requires pretreatment prior to coating to reach a similar quality than the mortar lines. The roughness of masonry walls is traditionally obscured by thick layers of textured paint, which was mechanically incorporated with quartz or silicon in the paint formulations. Decorative paints must not form a stiff film but may require the addition of a three-dimensional network-type polymer, so that a film with a sufficient mechanical resistance on film cracking is formed with time.
Traditionally, penetrating or vapor permeable/silicon-based varnishes may also be used to decorate stone surfaces. Today, some manufacturers produce transparent solutions for these types of surfaces, incorporated with microemulsion technology. Lastly, these varnishes may or may not contain a bactericide or fungicide because the surface is hidden. Despite present restrictions, vignetting remains a difficult choice with stone surfaces.
Colour Matching
Colour matching is always a usual task when it comes to repainting as it’s always difficult to paint an exact colour or shade as it was previously as many factors can dictate how color results when being painted. Failure to recreate the exact shading of the original Masonry or Brick can be a very displeasing outcome. Furthermore, pigment colors produced by chemical reactions such as rust and pollution may change over a long time and present considerable changes to that of the original. These factors vary in severity depending on the surface type, location, pigment type and factors related to the original product and manufacturer. It is always worth noting that as colors fade in the sun and lessen in details, it is harder to create something close to what was once an ideal shade. Usually though, there is no guarantee of an exact match.
